Israelis continue attacks on south Lebanon
Lebanon, Military, 10/1/1997
Israeli occupation forces on September 30 afternoon shelled with heavy artillery areas adjacent to occupied South Lebanon.
Security sources said the shelling covered the areas of Sujud, al Rayhan, Eqmata farm, al Lweizeh heights, Mlita Litani river bed, al Tassa spring course and Arafi' mountain.
The shelling was accompanied by heavy machine-gun fire on the woods and the valley of the areas opposite to the Al Zaffata position, according to the sources.
In the morning, Israeli warplanes flew over the south and Bekaa reaching the capital Beirut and breaking the sound barrier. Israeli Naval Forces stopped a trade ship carrying cars toward Tyre port, and inspected it.
Meanwhile, the Lebanese national resistance said that the Al Rafi' mountain resistance group attacked Israeli occupation positions in al Sweidaa and Barasheet areas causing great material losses.
Another group of resistance men attacked with machine-guns the Israeli occupation position in Masharoun and Tallouseh. In a statement, the resistance said it confronted with anti-aircraft rockets two helicopters which were trying to raid Majdal Sulum town.
Later in the day, resistance-men attacked with rockets and machine-guns Lahd militia patrol on Kilab Well Road in occupied south Lebanon. Resistance sources said the attack resulted in direct hits on the patrol.
Meanwhile, Israeli Defense Minister Yitzahk Mordechai said occupation troops will stay in south Lebanon until a settlement is reached on what he called "guaranteeing north Israel's security." Israeli Radio said Mordechai's remarks were made during Likud party activities in Tel Aviv on September 29.
