Egypt denounces Mansour Al Kekhya abduction report
Egypt, International, 10/1/1997
Cairo denied a report published Saturday in the Washington Post newspaper which alleged that Egyptian Intelligence Service agents kidnapped Libyan leader Mansour Al Kekhya. Al Kekhya had disappeared in Cairo December 11, 1993 from a hotel in the district of the Pyramids and was handed over to the Libyan authorities so they could execute him at the request of the Libyan leader, the paper added.
Egyptian sources confirmed that the investigation of Al Kekhya's disappearance is still open with no conclusions. Al Kekhya was participating in meetings of the board of trustees of the Arab Organization of Human Rights, of which he was a member.
Egyptian sources considered that what was mentioned in the Washington Post as a kind of pressure exercised by the Jewish lobby against Egypt to alleviate the pressure from which Israel is suffering now due to the international condemnations of the Israeli practices which might result in the destruction of the peace process.
The Egyptian sources added that the people who discovered this secret and published it must be enjoying vast imaginations. The sources linked these accusations to Egypt's request in the Security Council to alleviate the international sanctions imposed on Libya since April 1992 from which the Libyan people have suffered greatly.
