The meeting of the finance and budget committee
Lebanon, Economics, 9/30/1997
The parliament's finance and budget committee held a meeting yesterday, during which the development projects proposed by the government were discussed. The MPs who were in session all agreed on the refusal of the proposed plan and its tax-increases. They demanded the government to come up with a long-term economic plan and a large-scalereform project supervised by the administration and the independent assemblies.
The committee's president, MP Khalil Hrawi said, after the meeting, that, without this plan, the tax-increases are useless and that people are not obliged to endure what has been imposed by a certain financial and economic policy. MP Beydoun opposed, on the other hand, the way the displaced and the impoverished's issues are being linked to the approval of the development plan. The finance and budget committee is opening a session next Wednesday with financial authorities and the General Labor Confederation to listen to their proposals concerning the country's economic situation.
