Egypt studies certificates to insure foreign tourists
Egypt, Economics, 9/29/1997
The Egyptian Ministry of Tourism is studying the possibility of issuing certificates insuring the foreign tourists visiting Egypt after the incident in which 9 German tourists and the Egyptian driver were killed this month. The proposal was submitted to the Ministry by the Chamber of Tourist Companies.
The head of the Chamber of Tourist Companies, Elhamy Shahim, stated that the proposed certificates come among procedures aiming to preserve the tourist influx to Egypt and to remove the negative effects of the Egyptian Museum incident. These procedures include the revival of the idea of establishing Tourist Accidents Compensation Fund which the board of directors had previously agreed upon after an incident at the Pyramids which targeted a group of Greek tourists, but financial difficulties caused its implementation to be deferred at the time.
He added that the Chamber, in cooperation with the Ministry of Tourism started to contact some of the big organizers of tourist groups to Egypt in addition to the tourists visiting Egypt in order to explain the procedures adopted to prevent the repetition of the incident of the Egyptian Museum and to get their suggestions regarding the best way to provide insurance.
The Chamber, in coordination with the Ministries of Foreign Affairs and of Tourism started to contact foreign embassies in Egypt in order to clarify the security situation in Egypt and the procedures adopted to protect the foreign tourists.
