50 terrorists killed by Algerian forces; French mull aid for Algerian truce
Algeria, Military, 9/29/1997
Algerian troops have shot dead more than 50 terrorists in a four-day operation in the central province of Tiaret, an Algerian newspaper reported yesterday. Suspected terrorists killed 14 civilians and wounded more than 20 others in recent days the newspapers added.
Al Khabar, the main Arab language newspaper, said troops killed the terrorists in an assault which started early against 100 terrorists led by Mustapha Khalifa.
Meanwhile, Algeria's outlawed Islamic Salvation Front (FIS) called for a truce in the country's series of civilian massacres yesterday as French President Jaques Chirac debated how France could help stop the bloodshed there, Al Ahkbar daily said today 29.
Rabah Kebir, the Germany-based head of the FIS foreign wing, said in a statement it was time for the "sons of the people in the armed Islamic resistance" to take political steps to stop the bloodshed.
The Islamic Salvation Army, armed wing of the FIS, on last Wednesday declared a cease-fire from October 1 to expose rival rebels from the Armed Islamic Group (GIA) as the force behind mass killings of civilians in the North African country.
In a statement dated last Friday and received in Paris yesterday, FIS leader in-exile Kebir said, "The Islamic Salvation Front urges you to take the initiative, no matter what your position is on the national territory, to announce a truce."
