Netanyahu sees no possibility of a Syrian surprise-attack
Regional, Politics, 9/29/1997
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced, during an interview on Israel's Channel One TV yesterday, that he and his ministers will do their best to avoid conflict with Syria and Lebanon. He declared that he will work on his relationship with Syria and expressed a desire to reopen negotiations he hoped would eventually lead to peace. Asked about the possibility of a Syrian surprise-attack, Netanyahu answered that "from a point of view of the things that reach this desk, and everything reaches this desk, from what we know, we do not see those things."
Meanwhile, Israeli President Ezer Weizman said in the common press conference he held with Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak after their meeting in Alexandria yesterday, that the agreement with Syria is the only way to solve the Lebanese issue, which is a very sensitive one.
