Foreign investments boost in Qatar
Qatar, Economics, 9/27/1997

Qatar has become one of the most attractive destinations for foreign investments, according to the Qatari Minister of Energy and Industry Abdullah bin Hamad Al-Attiyah. Over $20 billion is now invested in various Qatari projects which sprang up in the state during the past five years, Al-Attiyah told reporters last night on his return from a tour of the United States and Canada.

Al-Attiyah, who is also the chairman of Qatar General Petroleum Corporation (QGPC), said his visit to the US was a follow-up to the recent visit made by the Emir of Qatar Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani, during which the two countries agreed to continue discussions on economic topics.

He was quoted by Qatar News Agency as saying that his visit to the US was successful. He had good talks with the American officials on a number of matters connected with "developing bilateral relations, particularly in the energy and industry fields."

American officials briefed the Qatari team on the US policy in energy and related "technological advances." The Qatari team told them of the investment climate and incentives given to foreign investors, as well as key projects underway in Qatar.

About his visit to Canada, the Minister said his talks with the Canadian officials were "excellent." "They will hopefully help in attracting Canadian firms to invest in Qatar," he added.
