American ambassador in Cairo: Egyptian economy was not affected by the current tension in ME
Egypt, Economics, 9/26/1997

The American ambassador in Cairo, Edward Walker, said that the possibility of an eruption of war in the Middle East region is inconceivable, and that the differences between the parties involved in the peace process will be solved in a way that will serve the interests of all the parties concerned.

The American ambassador mentioned that the Egyptian economy will not be affected by the current tension in the region, adding that the conference "Egypt: A Tiger on the Nile" affirmed the strength of the Egyptian economy, especially after the World Bank lauded Egyptian efforts and the high rate of growth being acheived.

Walker confirmed that the US government is committed to continuing aid programs as long as Egypt uses the money in the development fields. Walker said these statements after attending the "Girls' Education Conference" along with one of the deputy directors of the US Agency for International Development (USAID), Tony Christiansen Wagner. The conference was also attended by the Village Development Minister Mahmoud El Sherif.

Wagner stated that the USAID will contribute $85 million to establish 1000 complete-day schools in a similar way to what Mrs. Mubarak did when she established 1500 complete-day schools in the Egyptian villages.
