US aircraft carrier heads for Gulf
Gulf Region, Military, 9/26/1997
The US aircraft carrier Nimitz has left Japanese territorial waters on its way to the Arabian Gulf to monitor the embargo against Iraq, US military sources said on September 25.
The authorities told reporters that the carrier, escorted by five warships, had stopped in the port of Yokosuka in the first visit to Japan for fuel supply. This is the first nuclear-equipped carrier opened for visitation by the Japanese people. It attracted 20,000 visitors after its arrival last Sunday.
