Esmat Abdel Meguid: The Arab League did not take decisions to break the International blockade imposed on Libya
Regional, Politics, 9/25/1997

The Arab League said that it did not take a decision to call on its members to adopt procedures to break the blockade imposed on Libya.

The Secretary General of the Arab League, Dr. Esmat Abdel Meguid, stated that he does not think any decisions issued by the Arab League effect the measures to which Libya is subjected by the US, UK, and France. He stated that there are no decisions calling for breaking the blockade imposed on Libya.

Abdel Meguid added that the Arab League's discussions came after the Harari Summit recently held in which there was African agreement of the Organization of African Unity (OAU) which requested the Secretary General of the Arab League and the Secretary General of the OAU to address the Security Council in order to alleviate the blockade imposed on Libya, especially in the humanitarian and medical matters and the movements of Presidents to and from Libya.

Dr. Esmat mentioned that this decision came as a result of the flexibility shown by Libya regarding the interrogation of the Libyan suspects by a fair court and according to the Scottish law and by Scottish judges in one of the neutral countries, excluding the countries involved in this crisis; US, UK, and France. He added that there is no treaty signed between Libya and any of these countries to extradite criminals.
