Father of Lebanese cinema dies
Lebanon, People, 9/25/1997
Mohammed Alman, the "father of the Lebanese cinema," died on September 24 at age 75, a few hours after a lung operation at the American University Hospital in Beirut. He was buried at a private family ceremony.
Alman, Lebanon's most productive film-maker, left a legacy of some 34 films and over 150 compositions behind him.
He was from the south of Lebanon, and his life was very much like his movies: very disorganized, humorous and light-hearted.
He also possessed a sharp sense of humor which made him very popular among his friends. He was in the process of making a film about the resistance when he died.
Salman's professional life also included a series of documentaries which he filmed in Saudi Arabia.
He was also a holder of the order of the cedars.
He is survived by his former wife, singer and actress Najah Salam, and their two daughters, Nauhad and Sammar.
