Arab League criticizes US stand on Libya
Regional, Politics, 9/24/1997

The Arab League wondered about the US's latest stance towards the Arab League council resolution concerning the Arab countries' agreement on adopting measures to ease the international embargo against Libya.

The AL assistant secretary general for political affairs, Mohammed Zakaryah Ismael, talked about the Lockerbie affair, stating that the US stance denies the Arabs the right to defend their interests. He stressed that no one can deny such a right.

He said the AL council resolution is a new diplomatic, peaceful and legitimate attempt to urge all concerned parties to adopt new steps to ease the Libyan people's suffering at a time when Libya proposes a just solution showing her good intentions and cooperation with the international security council.

In the past, the Arab countries stressed the legal position of Libya and its acceptance of the interrogation of the suspects by the International Court of Justice in Geneva, headed by Scottish judges.

The Arab League submitted this proposal to Libya, who accepted it, but was turned down by the US.
