Egyptian lawyers defend the translator of Islamic group leader
Egypt, Politics, 9/22/1997
The head of the defending body of Egyptian citizens involved in the cases of religious violence, Dr. Abdel Halim Mandor, declared that efforts are being exerted to know the details of the case filed by the American Federation of Civil Freedoms against the American government due to the latter's detention of Naser Ahmed, the private translator of Dr. Omar Abdel Rahman the leader of the Islamic group who is serving a life sentence in a US prison in connection with the 1993 World Trade Center bombing in New York City.
Mandor said that the translator has lived in the US since 1987. He is married with three children and has no record of abnormal religious activities in Egypt.
Lawyer Mahmoud Abdel Rahman stated that the defending body of Omar Abdel Rahman in Egypt is following the developments of his case, the circumstances in which he lives, and the procedures taken by the US government against his assistants.
Abdel Shafi, another lawyer, considered the intervention of the US Confederation of Civil Freedoms a reflection of the extent of coercion to which Rahman and his assistants are subjected. He added that there must be so much pressure on Rahman that the Federation had to intervene.
