Algeria, Military, 9/22/1997

The Algerian authorities and security men in Algeria promise to face gunmen whom they believe are responsible in killing hundreds of innocent people across Algeria.

On September 21 security forces backed by crack troops have killed 21 gunmen in north Algeria and one day before they killed seven militiamen in Tizi Ouzou.

Meanwhile they killed another seven gunmen in Alakhdaria and four in Oued Ouchsieh in a battle lasting many hours. The dead men reportedly belong to Moujahedine, the army part of the Armed Islamic Group.

Government forces have killed 52 gunmen who were spreading terrorism in several parts of Algeria over the past three months, Al Akhbar newspaper said.
