Sudan, Politics, 9/19/1997

John Garang chief of the Sudan People's Liberation Army (SPLA) expressed the readiness of the forces of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) for the next round of battles.

In a telephone call to "Sout Al Sudan" radio , Garang appealed to university and secondary school students to joint the NDA forces for overthrowing the National Islamic Front (NIF) as the government of Sudan.

Garang congratulated the Sudanese people for waging the first open battle against the government after the success of the military campaigns last January.

He called on the tribes of the common border to find suitable mechanism for solving their problems.

He added that he and president Nelson Mandella of south Africa agreed on giving IGAD initiative more and time, Al Khartoum said today.
