Syrian and Egyptian presidents review latest developments
Syria-Egypt, Politics, 9/19/1997

Syrian President Hafez Al Assad arrived in Alexandria on September 18. He was welcomed by Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak and Egypt's premier, information minister, foreign minister and other ministers and officials.

The two presidents held a closed meeting in Ras Al Tean palace in Alexandria, where they discussed a host of issues pertaining to the latest developments in the region, including the situation to which Israeli policy has pushed the peace process, the current Arab efforts to reactivate joint Arab action, and pursuing peace negotiations leading to the realization of a just and comprehensive peace.

Talk also dealt with the results of Arab and foreign contacts regarding the regional situation and the peace process.

At the end of his visit to Egypt, President Assad held a press conference together with the President Mubarak in which he replied to questions from the media.

In a reply to a question about the development in the peace process, President Assad said that peace is a deep understanding. Peace is also justice and comprehensiveness regarding situations in the Arab world.

He also added that those who want peace should not have ambitions in others' lands or others' properties. Peace is not mere words but words of meaning and things that are accomplished; lasting peace is then possible. "The Israeli government stands opposite to all that. All of you listen to their declarations. As I have said earlier we are for peace, but not as comprehended by others," Assad said.

In a reply regarding the results of Madeleine Albright's visit to the region Assad said: "Mrs. Albright came to the region and we received her in Syria. Her proposals were very friendly, expressing her intention to push the Middle East peace process forward... I believe that she views that matters in the region are more difficult than what she has believed in the first place... But the desire is one thing and the possibility of implementing it in a just way is another."

President Assad was accompanyed by a delegation including Vice President Abdul Halim Khadam and Foreign Minister Farouk Al Shara'a.
