Comoros requests implementation of joint Arab defense treaty
Comoros, Military, 9/17/1997

The Comoros Islands requested the Arab League to implement the Joint Arab Defense Treaty (JADT) in order to stop separatist movements on two islands, Anjouan and Moheli, especially after government forces failed in getting the two islands under its control again.

The Republic of the Comoros Islands appealed to the Arab countries to send military and economic aid to improve its people's standard of living.

The third article of the JADT stipulates that in case the sovereignty or security of one member country is in danger, member countries of the treaty should convene on the request of that country in order to take the necessary procedures for defending this country.

The Arab League will study the request in its 108th session startign September 20, which will be headed by Saud Al Faisal, the Saudi Foreign Minister.
