Martinez becomes new International Parliamentary Union chief

Spainish candidate M. Martinez yesterday was chosen as the new International Parliamentary Union (IPU) chairman, succeeding Egypt's Dr. Fathy Serour as speaker of the assembly.
Martinez won more votes than India's P. A. Sangma and Senator Edward Monem of Argentina who contested the post. Monem later withdrew his candidacy.
Martinez got 127 votes, while his Indian rival obtained 88 votes.
This result comes out in the last IPU meeting in Cairo, Al Wafd daily said today.
