Berri meets Khatami in Tehran

Iranian President Khatami on September 16 told Lebanese Speaker Nabih Berri that Iran was willing to increase its economic and cultural ties with Lebanon and work for all through the government.
On a three day trip to Tehran, Berri told Khatami his election reinforced Iran's image and created a climate for greater mutual trust in the Arab world.
Berri described to his host the reconstruction process underway in Lebanon, saying that the budget deficit was still acceptable, but that he would no longer agree to further borrowing by the government nor to any new taxes.
Khatami described Lebanon as an area for the exchange of different opinions where intellectual interaction takes place.
Khatami praised also the Lebanese-Syrian relations and attacked military ties between Turkey and Israel and the United States.
