Environmental organisation charts Russian ship's voyage
Kuwait, Local, 9/16/1997

The executive secretary of the Regional Organisation for the Protection of the Marine Environment, Dr. Abdul Rahman Al Awadi, opened a meeting in Kuwait on September 15-16 for the scientific committee that is preparing for a sea journey by a Russian research ship to the gulf next summer.

The meeting grouped representatives from Kuwait, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Iran, United Arab Emirates Qatar and Oman.

Dr. Awadi mentioned in his speech that the journey comes according a decision by the regional organisation for the protection of the marine environment council in its meeting in Kuwait last year, which calls for a journey in the region every two years with the aim of getting acquainted with the chemical and biological effects resulting from Iraq's deliberate pumping of millions of barrels of oil into the gulf waters.

Al Awadi also said that the meeting aims to name the stations at which the Russian vessel would stop and take samples and the number of the scientists to take part in the research.

The journey will take part in the summer despite the sizzling temperatures, although they took place in the winter in previous years.
