British foreign minister to back US position on Doha on his visit
Regional-Palestine, Politics, 9/15/1997
Diplomatic sources mentioned that the British Foreign Minister will visit the self-rule areas, Israel, Egypt, and Jordan mid of October. Sources in the British Embassy in Cairo stated that the British Foreign Minister will discuss the development of the peace process and the deadlock caused by Israel's insistence on building settlements in Harhoma in Jerusalem, its stopping the Palestinian workers from entering Israel, and its refusal to implement the agreements signed with the Palestinian side.
The sources mentioned that the British Foreign Minister will also discuss the participation of these countries in the MENA Conference in Doha. Most Arab countries stated their unwillingness to participate in this conference.
The sources added that this tour aims to support the US Secretary of State's visit to the region. The sources elaborated that Britain is committed to support the peace process and that it objects to any procedures that could alter the balance of power before the last phase of negotiations. Britain called on Israel to halt building settlements, and to opening the gates to the Palestinian workers as Britain objects to mass punishment.
The visit of the British Foreign Minister was due to start in the beginning of this month but Israel asked Britain to delay it due to US Secretary of State's visit to the region.
