New Gulf Advisory Council is not a Gulf parliament
Gulf Region, Politics, 9/13/1997
Meetings of Foreign Ministers Council of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) will start tomorrow in Abha, in the south of Saudi Arabia. The Council will study the duties of the Advisory Council of the GCC in preparation for ratifying it in its upcoming meeting.
In these meetings, the Ministerial Council will ratify holding the Gulf summit in Kuwait in December. The candidates of the member countries for the new council will be discussed after the Gulf summit in Kuwait.
A source stated that each of the six member countries in the Advisory Council is responsible for choosing its representative, but the representatives must have great experience.
The source added that the Advisory Council is not a Gulf parliament. There is no intention to set up any parliament, as the aim of setting up this Council is getting the participation of those with past experience and wise views to serve the needs of the citizens of the GCC countries. The membership term of each representative is 3 years, automatically renewed on the request of the concerned country.
US Secretary of State Madeleine Albright will meet with the Foreign Ministers of the GCC in Abha. In the meeting the Foreign Ministers will discuss the peace process in the Middle East and the Israeli intransigence and Israel's continuation in building the settlements.
The Foreign Ministers will study the Iranian stance toward the Gulf countries, taking into consideration the positive statements of the government officials of the new president, Mohammed Khatami.
