Lebanese Prime Minister Hariri in Paris
Lebanon, Politics, 9/12/1997
Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik Hariri started yesterday his visit to France, that will last two days. After he had lunch, Hariri announced to the reporters the subjects of the discussions he had with the French foreign affairs minister and with French President Jacques Chirac.
The main points Mr. Hariri discussed with President Chirac were the situation in the Middle East, especially the troubles in south Lebanon, and the evolution of the peace process. Consequently, the subject of the five nation committee's task of observation was brought up in the conversation and France promised to keep its support to Lebanon and to peace process, whatever circumstances are. Economic development plans were also discussed, as well as programs of cooperation between Lebanon and France.
President Chirac announced that he wanted to tell Lebanese Prime Minister Hariri--and tell through him the whole Lebanese population--that despite that change in its government, France did not change its political attitude toward Lebanon, and that it will always be an attitude of support. He also mentioned that he discussed with Hariri all international and bilateral problems. He insisted several times on the importance of the "land for peace" that is the basis of the Oslo Agreement, before he concluded that the best way to reach security is to make peace.
Hariri also said that US Secretary of State Madeleine Albright has shown no intention of visiting Lebanon on her current visit.
