International archaeological collection on Tunisian shore
Tunisia, History, 9/11/1997

Tunisian Antiquity Authorities stated that an ancient ship lies 29 meters deep in the Mediterranean and 8 kilometers away from the Tunisian city of Al Mahdya. A source in the Antiquities Authority stated that the ship drifted from Italian to Tunisian shores and that it sank as a result of an overloaded cargo of columns, statues, crowns, and engravings that were stolen from Greece.

The sources added that all the antiquities found on board the ship are in good condition, not affected by the passage of time. What gives it great importance is the fact that it represents a world-class archaeological collection.

The city of Al Mahdya was the first Fatimide capital before the Fatimides moved to Egypt where they established their main capital in Cairo. The source mentioned that the ship dated back to the first century AD, which witnessed a fierce battles between cities in Italy and Greece. The Romans were victorious in these battles and destroyed the cities they conquered.
