Iraq, Kuwait delegations exchange accusations at International Parliamentary Conference
Regional, Politics, 9/11/1997

Members of the Kuwaiti and Iraqi delegations participating in the International Parliamentary Conference held in Cairo exchanged accusations regarding each of the two countries' possession of weapons of mass destruction and their insistence on keeping them.

Ahmed Al Saadon, head of the Kuwaiti National Council asserted in the meetings of the Arab Parliamentary Group that Iraq possesses many weapons of mass destruction, which were used in its aggression against Kuwait.

Iraq accused Kuwait of lying to the Security Council and the UN as Kuwait declared that it does not possess such weapons. Al Saadon mentioned that Iraq had to confess recently to its possession of weapons of mass destruction in a bid to soften the blockade imposed on it. He added that Israel possesses these weapons and refuses to submit to international inspection. He mentioned also that the Kuwaiti National Council insists on making the region and the world free of these weapons.

Tareq Aziz, the head of the Iraqi parliamentary delegation accused Al Saadon of exceeding the time limit in talking. He accused Kuwait of being responsible for the tension in the Gulf region. Aziz added that Iraq bought many weapons but does not know how to use them.
