Algerian Salvation Front halts contacts with government
Algeria, Politics, 9/10/1997
The Algerian Islamic Salvation Front (FIS) declared that it will halt its contacts with the Algerian government after Sheikh Abbas Madani was placed under house arrest. Sheikh Ahmed Al Zawy, a member of the National Shura Council, said that the front has suspended contact with the government in order to force the government to release Sheikh Madani.
He added that Sheikh Madani is the person responsible for holding negotiations, as he is the movement's leader. He said that any important decision that is not reviewed by Sheikh Madani, even while he is in imprisonment, is unofficial. The Committees of the Front will not act on any decision that is not reviewed by Madani.
