Tunisia ratifies the new five-year plan

Tunisian Parliament ratified the volume of investment required to implement the 9th development plan between 1997 and 2001 with 42 billion dinars, an increase of 63% over the previous plan which ended last year.

The government focused on the private sector, fingering it to play a prominent role in the current plan as its share of investment increased from 51% in the previous plan to 56% in the current plan.

Tunisia hopes to provide 320,000 job opportunities in order to reduce the unemployment rate from 17% to 15.6% by the year 2001. This will also improve the income of the Tunisian individual from 2,070 dinars to 3,140 dinars. Tunisia intends to set up 26 new industrial areas and to renovate 2,000 local factories to make them able to compete with the foreign factories after lifting customs.

The 9th development plan is concurrent with the implementation of the internship Tunisia reached with the European Community in 1995 which aims to create a free trade area by the year 2012.

Tunisia needs $11 billion of external investment in the new development plan. It needed $9 billion in the previous plan.
