Libya willing to hand Lockerbie suspects to independent Scotland
Libya, International, 9/9/1997

Libya asserted today that the Libyan suspects in the case of the Pan-Am Lockerbie bombing may be questioned by a Scottish court if Scotland gets its independence and becomes a free country.

Libyan sources said that the referendum expected to be held in Scotland should deal with the issue of independence not with self rule, which is a bad solution to a big problem. It is an attempt to make the British occupation a legitimate one like their occupation of India and their attempt to stop Ireland from becoming one country, according to the statement.

The sources said the self-rule solution is an offer that does not meet Scotland's hopes or its right to be a free country and a member of the UN, a request of the Scots.

Libya also added its voice to the Arab nations condemning joint naval maneuvers between Turkey, Israel, and the US scheduled to start in November. Libya considers these maneuvers a threat to the security of all Arab countries, and to Syria and Iraq in particular.
