Migrants from Sudanese war face death from starvation
Sudan, Local, 9/8/1997
12 thousand Sudanese from the city of Karmak who were left in the lurch by the war in the east migrated to the western regions in the Damazine, the capital of the Blue Nile province near the Sudanese borders with Ethiopia. They face the danger of death as a result of the severe shortage in food and the spread of infectious diseases in their camps.
Sudanese sources close to the migrants mentioned that the death rate is terribly high, but they declined to specify the number of deaths per day. The sources declared that the government adopted urgent measures that contributed in getting the situation under control.
The rainy season is thought to have cut the roads leading to the camps, a development that worsened the problem.
The Islamic Relief Agency sent about 8 tons of urgently needed food to migrants, but it is not enough for those in the Blue Nile region, especially through the upcoming three months after the crop of maize, a staple food in Sudan, will be finished for the year.
