87 Algerians killed in Beni Messous massacres
Algeria, Local, 9/8/1997
One of the bloodiest massacres since the start of the Islamist insurgency in 1992 took place in Beni Messous, 20 km from Algiers, where 87 people had their throats slit on September 6-7 by suspected Islamic extremists.
Most of the victims were women. Soldiers surrounded the area to assure calm, but the most of the families fled to the center of town, where they sought refuge in housing complexes.
