United Nations Security Council considers extending oil-for-food deal
Iraq, Economics, 9/4/1997
The UN Security Council is discussing whether Iraq, which delayed the start of sales, should be allowed to recoup the full amount of funds possible under the oil-for-food deal.
Iraq suspended sales of oil earlier in the 90-day sale period to protest delays in receiving supplies, making it unlikely that they will be able to sell the full 1 billion US dollars worth of oil allowed under the deal.
The US has opposed allowing an extension of the deal, but may reconsider its stance because some of the funds brought in under the deal will be payed out as compensation for the Gulf War.
