Jordanian government official: opposition's chances are over
Jordan, Politics, 9/3/1997

A Jordanian government official said that the chances for negotiations with the opposition are over. The source said the requests of the opposition are not feasible, as there are some parties that will not accept their implementation even if they were accepted by the government.

The official said that it is up to the opposition to change its stances and requests if it wants to participate in the upcoming election.

The source said that Prime Minister Dr. Abel Salam El Majali informed the secretary general of the Muslim Brotherhood organization, Abdel Meguid Zoneibat, that the government is committed to enacting a new election law which will be discussed in the first session of the new parliament. This will be done on the condition that the current election will be held under the current law. The new law proposes many changes, one of which is dividing Jordan into 80 election regions instead of 21.

The secretary general of the Brotherhood organization said that the organization, some parties, and the individuals who boycotted the election are trying to prepare a unified national paper which will express their views as one national front. Non-party individuals called on the government to carry out reforms in the political arena and to reduce its expenses. Everybody asked for putting into force the royal legal system which makes the king a judge rather than a ruler.
