Lebanon, Politics, 9/3/1997
During his visit to Brazil, Lebanese President Elias Hrawi met Lebanese expatriates there, and promised them that it would be soon be easy for them to get a Lebanese passport.
In fact, it was very hard for anyone to get citizenship in Lebanon during the civil war, because of the troubles and the conflicts between political parties. It was during an expatriate gathering that Hrawi promised them that it will become easier for them to obtain Lebanese citizenship. "The new nationalization law will soon be sent to parliament," Hrawi said.
He also visited his Brazilian counterpart Fernando Henrique Cardoso and Brazilian House Speaker Michel Tamer, who was born in Lebanon. "Part of Lebanese flesh and blood is here," said Hrawi, referring to the tight bonds between Lebanon and Brazil. The Brazilian president promised his support to Lebanon in the peace process and both presidents stated that cultural and communication and trade relations are going to be enhanced between the two countries.
Today Hrawi continues his visit, accompanied by Lebanese Foreign Affairs Minister Fares Bouez, who will discuss the problem of the peace process in the Middle East, and the importance of establishing a global peace in the region.
