Lebanese resistance attacks occupation troops, pays last respects to its dead
Lebanon, Military, 9/2/1997

An undisclosed number of Israeli soldiers were killed and wounded in attacks launched by the Lebanese national resistance movement on August 1.

A statement released by the Lebanese resistance movement said that Lebanese resistance-men used rocket propelled grenades (RPG) and heavy machine gun fire in their attacks on an Israeli military position in Rashaf in the occupied South.

Meanwhile, Israeli occupation forces targeted a number of Lebanese villages and towns with more than a hundred artillery shells. September 1 news dispatches from the South said that the bombardment was accompanied by flights by Israeli warplanes in a number of areas close to the occupied strip in the South.

Israeli jets flew raids on Al Za'tar mountain, located between the villages of Barashite and Tibnine. Lebanese sources said that Israeli helicopters and warplanes flew over the area of Wadi al-Hajeer, using heavy machine gun fire to comb the area.

As a response to these new attacks, which started at 6:00 p.m., the Islamic Resistance placed a bomb in the path of a South Lebanon Army (SLA) patrol, but no losses were reported by the SLA.

The radio of the Israeli-backed South Lebanon Army admitted that the Rashaf position came under attack and that one militia-man was injured in the attack.

Meanwhile, Israeli Defense Minister Yitzhak Mordechai stated on September 1 that Israel would maintain its occupation of the South.

Mordechai added that Israel would not implement the UN security council resolution No. 425, due to security considerations. He said that Israeli troops would remain in the South until security requirements are met.

Meanwhile, south Lebanon and Lebanese national resistance movements paid last respects to four members of the movement, who were killed during confrontations several days ago with Israeli occupation troops in the Hojair valley area.
