Damascus metro under discussion to alleviate traffic jams
Syria, Economics, 9/1/1997
Discussions between Syrian experts and Iranian and Armenian experts on a draft project for a Damascus metro have begun recently in Damascus, the director of studies in the Syrian Ministry of Transport, Mussa Shaar, said last week.
The idea of the project goes back to early 1980's when the former Soviet Union sent experts from Armenia to help achieve the project in Syria. Syrian prime Minister Mahmoud Al Zou'bi discussed the project with the Iranian and Armenian experts separately late last year.
The population in Damascus is estimated 4 million, and the project will help relieve traffic jams.
