Lockerbie and Israel's settlements on agenda of International Parliament
Regional, Politics, 9/1/1997
On September 11 Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak will inaugurate the meetings of the International Parliament conference, which will be held in Cairo. 134 member parliaments will attend the meetings.
Dr. Fathy Serour, the speaker of the International Parliament, declared that the conference will issue the Cairo Declaration at the end of its meetings, which will tackle the relations between the people and the multilateral party system, human rights and the conditions required to protect them.
A well-informed source mentioned that the Arab countries will add to the agenda of the conference Israeli violations of Palestinian human rights in the occupied Palestinian territories, Israel's continuation of building the settlement of Abu Ghoneim, and its indifference to UN resolutions which request Israel to stop building the settlement.
The source added that some Arab countries will request the addition of the Lockerbie crisis--which caused the blockade of Libya--to the agenda. Those countries will try to prove that the blockade is illegal, especially as Libya does not have any agreement of extradition of criminals with the USA, France, or the UK.
The Arab countries will highlight the legal position of Libya and its acceptance of the interrogation of the suspects by the International Court of Justice in Geneva, headed by Scottish judges.
It is important to mention that the Arab League submitted this proposal to Libya, who accepted it, but was turned down by the other three countries.
