Suffering of Taxi Drivers
Lebanon, Essay, 8/30/1997
In every cab one takes, the same complaints are repeated by the drivers.
Gas prices may be increased, and 1000 Lebanese Pounds per passenger will not be sufficient anymore for him to save money and feed his family. Besides, the driver is furious because of the traffic jams caused by the obstruction of some streets due to the infrastructure restorations.
The inevitable bottle of water is somewhere within his reach, and one often sees a small towel on his lap, for he needs it every few minutes to wipe off the drops of sweat dripping on his forehead, from unbearable August sun that burns him all day long.
Some people do not notice these details, and they refuse to get down from the car if they didn't reach their exact destination, obliging the poor taxi-driver to make numerous twists and bends and get stuck in further traffic jams. These people should just think a bit less about their well-being and a bit more about others, and the world would be much better.
