200 buildings to be destroyed
Lebanon, Local, 8/30/1997
The Lebanese Government announced its intention to demolish 200 old buildings with the consent of their owners. These buildings are already partly destroyed, and they could fall down at any moment.
"These buildings are actually a public danger, and they are used for misconduct and prostitution. Moreover, they have become huge reserves of trash," said one of the persons responsible for the campaign.
He added that the buildings that are about to be destroyed are not historical ones, so Lebanese citizens need not fear losing traditional edifices.A message from the government was sent to property owners all over Lebanon asking them to restore the structures they own as much as they can in order to improve Lebanon's image.
