68 kilos of heroin seized in Jeddah
Saudi Arabia, Local, 8/27/1997
The highway patrol foiled an attempt made by a drug-trafficking gang to transport 68 kilograms of heroin along the Jeddah-Makkah expressway, arresting the gang's members, according to Maj. Gen. Hassan al Ghati, the patrol's commander.
The heroin seized from the gang has been transferred to the anti-drug department, he told al Bilad.
The highway patrol is one of the support departments of public security. This year it has seized large quantities of drugs which were smuggled into the kingdom, the daily said.
The Saudi government has been leading a full-scale campaign against drug smuggling and those who smuggle drugs into the kingdom, to protect the public from the menace and destructive nature of drugs.
