Fire destroys spare parts showroom in Kuwait
Kuwait, Local, 8/27/1997
A fire ripped through 80 percent of a 5,000 square meter showroom stocking spare automotive parts in the Sharq industrial area on August 25 afternoon, an official told a local daily.
"High-speed winds and flammable paint aggravated the situation. However, working at breakneck speed, six fire squads and 100 fire-men were able to bring the fire under control after two hours, " the Director-General at the General Fire Department, Colonel Jassem Al Mansouri added.
"Acting on short notice, fire-fighting operations were pursued as soon as the fire broke out at a shop for paints and car spare parts. Firemen did their utmost to quell the fire, but strong gusts of wind fanned the blaze, which devastated the first floor and spread to contiguous areas," he said.
He explained that backup fire squads were called in to support the Hilali fire center: "Due to the coordinated efforts of various fire divisions, the fire was brought under control after two hours. Captain Mutlaq al Foudari from the Hilali fire center was suffocated and was hurried to the Amiri Hospital for medical treatment."
The fire-stricken area was cordoned off by security men.
