Further Israeli reinforcements sent to south Lebanon
Lebanon, Military, 8/27/1997

Israeli occupation forces on August 26 sent ten armed vehicles to their positions at Abbas hill, Markaba barracks and Mash'roun in occupied south Lebanon in consolidation of their presence in these positions.

Meanwhile, an Israeli gunboat approached the shores of al Gharya, close to Sidon. The Lebanese army confronted the boat and forced it to retreat.

Earlier in the morning, 100 Lahd militia-men besieged the occupied town of Kfar Houneh, broke into the houses and searched them without giving any reason.

Security sources said the elements intended to carry out mopping-up operations in the valleys and the woods neighboring the targeted town using machine-guns.

The sources said Israeli warplanes carried out sorties over Bekaa area. The warplanes also carried out provocative mock raids over the areas of Nabatieh and al Tuffah district.

Earlier on August 25 night, violent clashes took place between the Lebanese national resistance and the Israeli occupation forces in Western Bekaa.

News reports said an Israeli commando unit was trying to proceed to Berket al Jabour position but the Lebanese resistance confronted it and forced it to retreat.

Rockets and tank guns were used in the clashes. The Israeli shelling covered the outskirts of al Jabbour, the Abou Rashed area, Midon hills, al Dhaher mountain and Qilia and Zalaya. In retaliation the Lebanese resistance shelled the occupation forces and their agents in their positions in Tomat Jizzin Naqar Kowkaba and Kfar Houleh.

Meanwhile, Lebanese parliament speaker Nabih Berri met Joseph Salivan, the current president of the committee in charge of implementing the "April understanding." The meeting was attended by the US ambassador to Lebanon, Richard Jones. Talks dealt with the situation in south Lebanon.

Berri showed the US delegation photos of darts collected from Saint Antonius Monastery in Nabatieh and from other areas in South Lebanon after Israeli occupation forces used internationally-banned dart-filled bombs against people in Nabatieh on August 25.
