Arab League criticizes dam-building decision on occupied Syrian Golan
Syria, Politics, 8/25/1997

The Arab League (AL) has strongly criticized the Israeli government's decision to build a dam inside the occupied Golan Heights north of the June 4, 1967 lines.

Arab League assistant secretary General Mohammed Zakaraya Ismael said the decision constitutes a new Israeli attempt to provoke and blackmail.

"Failure is the destiny of such policy that ignores the international legitimacy in establishing a just and comprehensive peace based on the UN security council resolutions, and the land for peace principle," he added.

Mr. Ismael said Israel's allegations that the reason for the dam is economic and not political, deserve ridicule because the issue of land and the Arab right of sovereignty on their own lands and resources is the center of the Arab-Israeli conflict.

He added that Israeli pressure on Syria will not defeat Syria's stance against Israeli maneuvers and threats. He added Israel will not succeed in destroying relations between Syria and Jordan when it alleges that it had received Jordan's approval to move the position of the dam north of the June 4, 1967 Syrian borders with the aim of sharing waters with Jordan.

Meanwhile Tunisian Al Sabah newspaper has condemned the new Israeli provocation concerning the Arab waters in the Syrian Golan. It said these provocations stress Netanyahu's aggressive intentions to consolidate the Israeli occupation of Golan.

Al Sabah said the Israeli designs against Arab water resources are not new and now they reached the top through Israel's insistence to capture all Arab water resources in South Lebanon, Jordan valley and part of Nile River.
