To Qana with Love
Lebanon, Essay, 8/23/1997

To Qana, is the name of a play that documents the ongoing heroic struggle in the occupied South of Lebanon, involving the true owners of the land and Israeli usurpers; it depicts struggle between right and wrong, in a way that no stereotypes or hallow slogans being articulated by protagonists.

In the play there is the scene of peasants and farmers ploughing their fields; shadows of trees and plants spread over the whole place.

Act one highlights the eternal link between man and his land, stressing on the tools that would make this close relationship between the two more effective and meaningful.

There are spades and axes mingled with soft fur whispers of Lebanese folklore songs. Shadows of the trees form a very beautiful scene To Qana. It is a village dozed in beauty, just like any other village or town in the south.

Joyful events follow suit there is the wedding ceremony, children playing, birds chirping but hearts are laden with sadness and pain because of the continued occupation.

The play focuses on the relationship between opposites in the southern scene; death contrast life, music and spring contrast agony, drought contradicts rain and wedding the theatrical scene in the play derives its form from the daily events in the south, and the struggle with the Israeli enemy and its agents.

Southerners are accustomed to all these things that would create pain, sorrow and joy at the same time. Amidst the scorched land, there is always hope of salvation and freedom. Under a sky raining bombs and deaths down on them, Lebanese farmers never lose faith in rainy seasons of flowers and fruits.

To Qana stresses on the resistance as the only glimmer of hope in a surrounding of pitched darkness of capitulation.

The scenes of killing and carnage perpetrated by Israeli enemy in the south do not negate elements of joy, happiness and salvation the ordinary man is feeling.

Despite tools of death and devastation, life will continue to yield flowers in the south.
