Food gap increases in 3 Sudanese areas
Sudan, Agriculture, 8/23/1997
The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization ( FAO ) has estimated the food deficit in the Sudan at 600,000 tons and that most of the deficit will be experienced in Dafur, Kurdfan and the Red Sea, and southern Sudan, according to a report issued by the FAO and distributed by its regional office in Nairobi.
The report pointed to the need to provide 74,000 tons of food in the form of emergency aid, including 39,000 tons, with the help of the lifeline program, for the relief of 2.6 million destitute Sudanese affected by the civil war.
The report said the hazards from locusts are limited but it is likely that the they will multiply in limited areas on the coasts of west Africa, the Sudan and southern Mauritania.
The report said some swarms of locusts were noticed in the Sudan; such swarms could have possibly crossed the Red Sea from Yemen, El-Khartoum daily said on August, 22.
