Algerian demonstration against terrorism
Algeria, Politics, 8/21/1997
Algeria rose up yesterday against terrorism it has suffered from for 10 years. In very crowded demonstrations, thousands of Algerian people gathered, chanting in one voice "no to terrorism," "stop killing the innocent," and other slogans condemning the wave of terrorism that has swept the country at the hands of Islamist rebels.
This protestors marched along highways and the streets, asking the rebels to stop killing their families. Government soldiers backed the demonstration, condemned the violence and asked all parties to sit and try to find a just resolution and turn back this country to the peaceful situation.
Demonstrators wandered around Algerian cities and villages condemning terrorism and savage massacres against civilians. No such large-scale demonstrations had occurred in Algeria for many years.
