Kuwaiti industry faces problems, needs exports
Kuwait, Business, 8/18/1997

Industry in Kuwait faces several obstructions, including rampant red tape during issuing and renewal of licenses, a Kuwaiti union leader stated.

Khaled al Sane, chairman of Kuwait Industry Union (KIU) told the Arabic daily al Qabass that these procedures are a waste of investors' time.

Sane added that local products had lost the protection and support of the state. This led to the local market being flooded intentionally with imported commodities, he added.

Likewise, he said that authorities had failed to organize effective inspection campaigns to ensure that imported goods are in line with Kuwaiti, Gulf and international specifications.

Replying to a question, Al Sane said that local Kuwaiti products are being exported to neighboring countries. But he added that this was solely due to the personal efforts of Kuwaiti industrialists.

However, Al Sane suggested that officials must include delegates from the local industrial sector. He also added that his union should be assigned a significant role in organizing fairs sponsored by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry.

This measure, he declared will help open new marketing opportunities for Kuwaiti industrialists.

He stated that his union was striving to encourage the national work force to join the industrial sector through its post liberation strategy. He added that the state should also play a significant role in this respect.

Al Sane added that the union since its establishment was striving to stage a permanant exhibition of local industrial products with the objective of promoting such products.

Contextually, he said, the union had empowered a consulting bureau to conduct an integrated study in this regard which will be submitted to the Ministry of Commerce and Industry and the Kuwait Bank for establishing a specialized firm to undertake the marketing of Kuwaiti industrial products. He expressed the hope that this project will materialize soon.
