Rationing leads to fewer wheat imports
Egypt, Agriculture, 8/15/1997
Wheat imports will decrease by one million tons next year to reach 4.750 million tons, a progress which Dr. Ahmed Goweili, minister of supply, attributed to the governmental wheat rationing policy.
Dr. Goweili denied the reports of a rise in the prices of the mixed loaf, made of cornflower and maize.
Addressing the symposium on food security in Egypt, attended by foodstuff experts from the US, international foodstuff organizations, and representatives of the ministries of agriculture and trade, Dr. Goweili said that Egypt has adopted a plan which will increase the yield of grain by up to nine million tons over the coming three years.
