Zoghbi condemns forced closure of unlicensed media
Lebanon, Business, 8/14/1997
The president of the government-recognized General Labor Organization (GLC), Ghanime Zoghbi, on August 13 condemned the government's decision to shut down unlicensed audio-visual media stations, which he said has led to more than one thousand employees being thrown out of work.
"We condemn the decision to shut down unlicensed media stations which was issued at a time when the country is experiencing a social crisis and recession. The decision has led to an increase in unemployment through driving more than a thousand families into the street and leaving them unprotected by the law," Zoghbi said.
He called the decision unjust because it did not mention anything about the fate of employees "who have lost their future."
Zoghbi called on officials to find a suitable solution and expressed support for protest actions by the association of media technicians.
