Albright: I think that it's a dangerous situation
Regional, Politics, 8/8/1997
US Secretary of State Madeleine Albright said that the situation in the Middle East has reached a dangerous level, but that the peace process has surivived many bad times before.
In a television interview with U.S. TV program "PBS's Newshour", she said that the Palestinian and Israeli people were suffering from violence and that Arafat, "Should deal with the violence." She stressed the need for Netanyahu and Arafat to act as partners.
When asked about Netanyahu's comments likening Israel's sanctions against the Palestinians to those of the U.S. against Libya, Albright dismissed those remarks as "Using analogies that don't fit doesn't prove any point." and "using rhetoric and language that inflames the situation" does not help.
US envoy Dennis Ross will travel to the region this weekend in the hope of calming the situation and laying the groundwork for a possible visit by Albright.
