Kuwaiti people cautioned not to forget the past
Kuwait, Politics, 8/6/1997

Ahmed Al Rubei, former Kuwaiti minister of education, warned the Kuwaiti government and people in an interview with the Kuwaiti daily Al Qabas on August 5 that he believes the Iraqi government has not changed and is capable of repeating its invasion of Kuwait if the circumstances were right. Rubei slammed Arab calls for Kuwait to "forget the past and turn a new page with Baghdad."

He said, "After all these years of war and destruction, the Iraqis have just stated their invasion was one of the most glorious events in the history of humanity."

"That means that now that Iraq is even angrier, there is every possibility that it will repeat its act if the circumstances are right," he added.

On the day of the anniversary of the Iraqi invasion to Kuwait, Baghdad as in past years, hailed the invasion as a historic victory, despite its crushing defeat in the 1991 Gulf war when a US-led multinational coalition ended Iraq¹s seven-month occupation of Kuwait.

The Kuwaiti government has said that the only way to reestablish relations with the Iraqi government is if, "Iraq¹s serious implementation of United Nations resolutions will open the door to its return to the fold of civilized nations."
